Why Am I Using So Much Air While Scuba Diving? (7 Common Reasons)

One of the questions we hear most often from new and even experienced divers is:
"Why am I using so much air?"
It usually comes up at the end of a dive when everyone is comparing pressures. One diver surfaces with 1,500 psi remaining, while another is already approaching their reserve. It's easy to assume the answer is simply, "I'm just a heavy breather."
While lung capacity and fitness can play a small role, they are rarely the biggest factors.
After working with hundreds of divers over the years, we've found that air consumption is usually a reflection of overall diving efficiency. The way you move, your buoyancy, your body position, and even your comfort level all affect how quickly you use the air in your cylinder. The encouraging news is that these are all skills that can be improved.
1. You're Working Harder Than You Realize
Many divers don't realize how much unnecessary movement they're making throughout a dive. Maybe you're constantly adjusting your buoyancy, kicking harder than necessary to stay with the group, or using your hands to help you turn or maintain position. Each of these movements requires energy, and the more energy your body uses, the more oxygen it consumes. Watch experienced divers underwater and you'll notice something interesting. They often appear to be doing very little. Their movements are smooth, deliberate, and efficient. They're not working less because they're stronger—they're working less because they're more efficient.
2. Your Buoyancy Needs Refinement
Buoyancy is one of the biggest contributors to good air consumption.
If you're constantly adding air to your BCD, dumping air, kicking to stay off the bottom, or finning to keep from floating upward, you're expending energy every few seconds without realizing it. Good buoyancy isn't about staying perfectly still. It's about making fewer corrections throughout the dive. As your buoyancy improves, you'll notice your breathing naturally begins to slow because your body is no longer working as hard.
3. Your Kick May Be Costing You More Than You Think
Propulsion is another area where many divers lose efficiency.
Large flutter kicks, kicking from the knees, or constantly trying to overpower the water all require extra effort. Bigger kicks don't necessarily move you farther—they often create more drag. A compact, controlled kick that originates from the hips allows you to move farther while using less energy.

4. You're Carrying More Weight Than You Need
Being overweighted is incredibly common.
Many divers add extra weight "just to be safe," but that additional weight often creates more problems than it solves. More weight means carrying more air in your BCD to compensate. More air in your BCD creates greater changes in buoyancy as you change depth, leading to more frequent adjustments throughout the dive. Proper weighting helps simplify everything else.
5. Your Body Position Creates Drag
Imagine trying to ride a bicycle while sitting sideways.
You could still move forward, but it would take much more effort.
The same principle applies underwater. Divers who swim in a vertical position or with their legs hanging below them create unnecessary drag. A horizontal, streamlined position allows water to flow around your body instead of resisting it. Good trim not only improves air consumption but also makes buoyancy and propulsion feel much easier.
6. You're Still Learning to Relax
This may be the most overlooked factor of all. Newer divers naturally experience a higher workload simply because everything is still unfamiliar. They're thinking about breathing, equalizing, checking gauges, monitoring buoyancy, watching their buddy, and enjoying the scenery—all at the same time. That mental workload often leads to faster breathing. As diving becomes more familiar, most of those tasks become second nature. Divers begin to relax, movements become smoother, and breathing naturally slows. This is one of the reasons why experienced divers often have noticeably better air consumption than newer divers.
7. You're Focusing on the Wrong Goal
Many divers become obsessed with improving their air consumption.
Ironically, that can become part of the problem. Trying to force yourself to breathe less or constantly checking your pressure gauge often creates unnecessary stress.
Instead of focusing on using less air, focus on becoming a more efficient diver.
Work on your buoyancy.
Refine your trim.
Improve your kick.
Slow your movements.
Become more comfortable underwater.
Better air consumption is usually a result of those improvements—not the other way around.
Air Consumption Is a Result, Not a Skill
One of the biggest misconceptions in scuba diving is that good divers simply have "better lungs." The reality is that efficient divers are usually just moving through the water with less effort. They aren't stronger than everyone else.
They aren't holding their breath. They're simply making fewer unnecessary movements and allowing the equipment—and the water—to work with them instead of against them.
